Week Two: The U.S. Constitution

The Essential Question for this week is: What does the U.S. Constitution do?


The Georgia Performance Standard that you'll work with this week is:

SSCG3 The student will demonstrate knowledge of the United States Constitution.
a. Explain the main ideas in debate over ratification; include those in The Federalist.
b. Analyze the purpose of government stated in the Preamble of the United States Constitution.
c. Explain the fundamental principles upon which the United States Constitution is based; include the rule of law, popular sovereignty, separation of powers, checks and balances, and federalism.


The assignments for this unit are listed below. Please be sure to follow all instructions for completing assignments and receiving the maximum points possible.

Week Two Assignment 1: NovNET Module 2
SCCG 3, element a,b,c
- Complete all lessons and mastery assessment (Module 2 A-E). It is required that you take notes as you work through each module. Half of your points will come from your notes, and the other half will come from your test scores. Be sure to include the following information in your NovaNet notes that are turned in for credit:
  • Date
  • Title of Module
  • Title of Lesson
  • Significant (important) information from lessons: definitions, notable people/places/things, historical information, explanation of concepts, charts, etc.

Week Two Assignment 3: Toxic Toys? Is the government promoting the general welfare? Case Study
SCCG 3, element b
- In this assignment you will read a short article about toxic toys in the U.S. and reflect upon whether or not you think the U.S. government is living up to the goal of promoting the general welfare as stated in the preamble of the Constitution.

Week Two Assignment 4: Principles of the U.S. Constitution

The U.S. Prison System: Is Popular Sovereignty Working? Case Study

With this case study you will think about the Constitutional concept of “popular sovereignty” (the people rule) as you respond to this article that discusses the U.S. prison system.

Week Two Assignment 6: Week Two GPS Quiz
